Spotlight on Monmouth University in Long Branch, NJ

Monmouth University: A Piece of New Jersey History

Monmouth Junior College was founded in 1933 as a two-year institution offering higher education for students facing economic hardship during the Depression era. About two decades later, Monmouth College became accredited to offer four year programs, and within another decade, was offering master’s degree programs.

Monmouth University is now a private institution offering 32 undergraduate and 24 graduate degree programs, as well as many certificate programs.

Monmouth University’s 159 acre campus includes Wilson Hall, a beautiful National Historic Landmark and the setting for the 1982 film version of Annie. The Walt Withey Chapel, located in Wilson Hall, was once part of a 16th century Tudor Abbey and was imported from Europe. Guggenheim Cottage, another iconic and historic building on campus, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and houses the Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Memorial Library.
